Exploring Nano-Science and Technology
with Karl Weiss
For more than 30 years Karl Weiss has dedicated his career to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. As an authority on the study and application of extremely small things, Karl works with Arizona State University (ASU) students and researchers across all fields of science and engineering. He has also introduced thousands of K-12 students and teachers to the wonders of the Nano-world. Understanding the importance of each new generation of possible scientists, Karl has always believed in providing fun and interactive educational outreach to students of all ages. “I just want them to be excited about learning…” He says. Karl always paints a vivid picture for students, providing a point of reference and equipping them with general concepts before introducing technical specifics. Karl makes sure that students leave with a basic understanding and a lot of questions. “…I try to make it so that they leave here wanting to learn more…”
His extensive knowledge in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, and Nano Science/Technology has earned Karl the respect of colleagues and researchers around the World. As the Laboratory Manager in the LeRoy Eyring Materials Center, on ASU’s Tempe Campus, Karl has trained and consulted for international academics, students, and private sector professionals. His dedication to advancing STEM based education for future STEM professionals, has motivated Karl to bring together a consortium made up of Nano Professionals and Education professionals, to produce a best practice model for teaching STEM based topics. A project tentatively called “Lasers to Electrons”.
Among those invited to join Karl’s STEM Team was Avem Systems Executive Director, Roxanne Montoya. For more than fifteen years Roxanne has been devoted to the advancement of scientific literacy through the development of effective science outreach programs that are both fun and enriching for learners of any age. As the former Program Manager for Arizona State University’s “Science is Fun” program, and the Instructor for the Accompanying Internship STEM Courses, Roxanne has facilitated STEM based classes, and developed education programs and materials for K-12 students, university undergraduate students and graduate students, teachers, and the general public. “I’m thrilled to be working with Karl again. Not only is he one of my favorite people on the planet, Karl truly cares about motivating and educating the next generation of STEM professionals.”
Karl Weiss says that this STEM consortium, which also includes local high schools, teachers, and Hitachi Educational Outreach Professionals, plans to roll out their Nano-based STEM program in the spring of 2022. The does however depend on the how the restrictions of the covid-19 pandemic effect their planning process. For now, the group is still looking for test classrooms/participants and partners. If you would like more information on this project, please submit an Avem Systems “request” or “contact” form.
